Ishan Kishan lands himself in controversy over ball change against Australia A

The Indian ‘A’ wicketkeeper was cautioned for possible dissent over ball change

Ishan Kishan was yet again at the centre of controversy when the Indian A wicketkeeper was cautioned for dissent after an exchange with umpire Shawn Craig during the first unofficial Test against Australia A. The 26-year-old was involved in an altercation with the umpire after they had changed the ball overnight.

The umpires, according to ESPNCricinfo’s reports, were heard saying they had replaced the ball because of the scratches. "Scratch it, we change the ball...no more discussion, let's play," Craig said as Kishan replied: "So we are going to play with this ball…that's a very stupid decision."

That puts Kishan in serious danger, as he goes into the report for dissent, and further trouble could even ensue for the Indian wicketkeeper in case they find the ball tampered with.

"Excuse me, you'll be on report for dissent. That's inappropriate behaviour. Because of your actions, we changed the ball."

However, according to Law 41.3.4, which governs penalties for a change in the condition of the ball, the hosts were not awarded a penalty.

What does the law say?

Law 41.3.4: If the umpires consider that the condition of the ball has been unfairly changed by a member or members of either side, they shall ask the captain of the opposing side if they would like the ball to be replaced. If necessary, in the case of the batting side, the batters at the wicket may deputise for their captain.

41.3.4.1: If a replacement ball is requested, the umpires shall select and bring into use immediately a ball which shall have wear comparable to that of the previous ball immediately prior to the contravention.

41.3.4.2: Regardless of whether a replacement ball has been chosen to be used, the bowler's end umpire shall:

• award five penalty runs to the opposing side.

• if appropriate, inform the batters at the wicket and the captain of the fielding side that the ball has been changed and the reason for their action.

• inform the captain of the batting side as soon as practicable of what has occurred.

At the time of writing, Cricket Australia confirmed that the Indian wicketkeeper will not be charged with 'dissent', and added that the ball was changed due to its condition. They also added that both the captains and the managers were informed of the change in ball before the day's play, and no further action would be taken on the 26-year-old.

"The ball used in the fourth innings of the match was changed due to deterioration. Both teams' captains and managers were informed of the decision prior to the start of play. No further action is being taken." read the statement.

The second first-class match begins at the MCG on November 7 (Thursday).
