Ireland’s Simi Singh undergoes successful liver transplant surgery

The all-rounder took to Instagram to announce the news, and confirmed in the same post that it was his wife who was his liver donor

Ireland cricketer Simi Singh, who was admitted at the Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon after acute liver failure, has undergone a successful liver transplant surgery. The all-rounder took to Instagram to announce the news, and confirmed in the same post that it was his wife who was his liver donor.

“Hi guyz. Just an update that I’ve gone through my liver transplant surgery. And it was a 12-hour long surgery, and now I’m in a recovery phase,” Singh posted on his Instagram story.

“I’m extremely fortunate to have my wife, who eventually became my donor,” Singh added.

The 37-year-old, who played 35 ODIs and 53 T20Is between 2017 and 2022, revealed in the same post that the liver failure occurred due to wrongly prescribed antibiotics and steroids.

Earlier this month, his Father-in-Law, Parvinder Singh, told Times of India in an interview that it was at the start of 2024 in Dublin that Singh developed a ‘strange fever which kept coming back’ due to which they took the all-rounder to India for treatment.

"Some five to six months back, when he was in Dublin, Ireland, Simi developed a strange fever that kept coming and going,” his father-in-law Parvinder Singh had told the Times of India.

“He got himself examined there, but nothing conclusive came out in the check-ups. The medical professionals there said that they couldn't find the underlying cause and therefore they wouldn't start medication…The process was getting delayed, and his health was deteriorating, so we decided to get him treated in India for 'better medical attention'.

“But his health kept deteriorating, and the PGI physicians detected that he had developed acute liver failure. They advised us to take Simi to Medanta, Gurugram, because there was a high probability of him slipping into a coma, after which a transplant wouldn't be possible. We came to Medanta on September 3.”

The off-spinning all-rounder last played professional cricket in September 2023, in the Cricket Ireland Inter-Provincial Limited Over Cup, representing Leinster Lightning.
