Irani Cup: Sarfaraz Khan smashes ton after Ajinkya Rahane falls just short of it

The Mumbai batter slammed his 15th first-class ton and his second in the Irani Cup

After being released from the Indian squad, Sarfaraz Khan made amends as he smashed a century in the Irani Cup for Mumbai against the Rest of India (RoI) in Lucknow. This is Sarfaraz's second ton in the Irani Cup, having last achieved the milestone exactly two years ago while representing RoI against Saurashtra. This was also the 26-year-old's 15th first-class century.

However, Mumbai skipper Ajinkya Rahane fell three runs short of his ton as he was caught behind off Mukesh Kumar. Rahane, who batted extremely well on Day One, managed to add just 11 more runs to his overnight score. He did not take part in the Duleep Trophy preceding the Irani Cup, as he turned up for Leicestershire in the English County.

Rahane, though, will lead defending champions Mumbai in the upcoming Ranji Trophy season, starting October 11.

Sarfaraz had a close call when he was batting on 95 when he skied a ball from Manav Suthar, but Prasidh Krishna, who was running back from mid-on, failed to grab it. The batter was part of India's squad for the Test series against Bangladesh but did not get a single game.

He was released from the squad a couple of days before the Irani Cup, along with Yash Dayal and Dhrv Jurel, who are part of the RoI squad.
