Former Sri Lanka cricketer Mahela Jayawardene has been appointed as head coach of the Mumbai Indians for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, the franchise confirmed in a media release.
Jayawardene, formerly the Global Head of Cricket for the Mumbai Indians group, will take over from former South Africa international Mark Boucher for the 2025 season of the extravaganza.
The 47-year-old, who was first signed up as the coach of the IPL side in 2017, remained at the position until 2022. He led the side to three trophies, the most for any coach after New Zealand’s Stephen Fleming who has led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to record five titles.
However, with MI expanding globally, taking franchisee in other countries’ domestic T20 set-ups such as the SA20 (South Africa), ILT20 (UAE) and MLC (USA), Jayawardene was appointed as head of global affairs and was replaced by Boucher.
Akash Ambani, owner of the Mumbai Indians, while speaking on the development said, “We are thrilled to have Mahela back as the Head Coach of Mumbai Indians. With our global teams having found their footing within their ecosystems, the opportunity to bring him back to MI arose.”
Jayawardene was equally chuffed about coming back as head coach of the side and once again building the core strength for the team with an eye on the future.
“In 2017, the focus was on bringing together a talented group of individuals to play the best cricket ever, and we did very well. Now to return, at the same moment in history, where we look ahead at the future and the opportunity to further strengthen the love of MI, build on the vision of the owners and continue to add to the history of Mumbai Indians," he said.
