Indians in English One Day Cup: Iyer wins thriller, Shaw slackens

Venkatesh Iyer stole the limelight from Prithvi Shaw as he won Lancashire a thriller

The English domestic One Day Cup 2024 is getting towards its business end with every team playing three matches in the last nine days since we did the first review of the tournament involving Indian players.

Venkatesh Iyer has stolen the limelight from Prithvi Shaw from the last week as he won Lancashire their second game against Worcestershire, which was also only the second win for the team from Manchester in this season. Other than Shaw and Iyer, Ajinkya Rahane is plying his trade for Leicestershire and has performed relatively well.

Venkatesh Iyer  - 9 & 0/17, 15 & 1/40 and 25 & 2/38

Iyer, who had scored only 15 and 4 runs and remained wicketless in his first two innings for the Old Trafford-based side, managed to pull things up. The 29-year-old scored 9, 15 and 25 in his next three innings. But, it was his outing with the ball in the match against Worcestershire that changed things for the Kolkata Knight Riders player. Bowling the 49th over, Iyer got the last two wickets of the opposition when they needed 16 to win with two wickets in hand in the last two overs.

Ajinkya Rahane - 29*, 6 & 62

Rahane has been doing well in the premier 50-over domestic tournament of England and Wales. Despite not finding a place in the Duleep Trophy squads back home, the middle-order batter scored important runs, including a match-winning half-century against Gloucestershire. The 36-year-old is currently the ninth-highest run-scorer in the season after the end of the first nine games with 375 runs with an average of 46.87.

Prithvi Shaw- 9, 23 & 27

Shaw, playing for Northamptonshire, loosened his grip on the good form for the Northamptonshire side, scoring only 9, 23 and 27 after having notched up three fifties in his first five innings for the central-England-based side in the tournament. Even after this slackening though, the 24-year-old remains among the top 15 batters with the most runs in the One Day Cup 2024. He has so far accumulated 343 runs at an average of 42.87 and a strike rate of 117.86.
