England's domestic One Day Cup 2024 has seen three Indian players Prithvi Shaw, Venkatesh Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane feature in it. After a successful season last year with Northamptonshire, Shaw has continued his successful stint with the county club. However, Iyer and Rahane have struggled, representing Lancashire and Leicestershire respectively.
We look at the performance of these players in the One Day Cup and try to gauge what to expect from the three men who have all represented India at the highest level and harbour hopes of getting back into the national side soon.
Prithvi Shaw
Shaw, who made an amazing 153-ball 244 while playing for Northamptonshire in the 2023 One Day Cup, has continued to be impressive this season as well. After enduring a cold IPL, Shaw did not start well in England but has come back with three consecutive fifties for his side. All of his fifty-plus knocks have come at a strike rate of more than 100 which is a big plus for the man looking to make inroads into the Indian side.
The 24-year-old is the fifth highest run-scorer in the competition this season with 294 runs from five innings at an average of 58.8 and a strike rate of 127.7. With a few more matches lined up, the Mumbaikar would look to continue his form and score some big runs.
Northamptonshire, however, have won only one of their five matches. They are placed at the eighth spot on the points table in Group A.
Ajinkya Rahane
Rahane, who had a horrible domestic season with the bat, even though he won the Ranji Trophy with Mumbai as captain, came to England with the hope of reviving his career. Rahane scored only 214 runs in 13 innings of the Ranji Trophy 2023-24. In the ongoing One-Day Cup, the 36-year-old has two fifties for Leicestershire, scoring a total of 179 runs in four innings at an average of 44.75 and a strike rate of 107.51.
With three wins in four matches, Leicestershire are placed fourth on the points table in Group B.
Venkatesh Iyer
It would be hard to believe, but apparently, Venkatesh was on his honeymoon when he received the call from Lancashire management on whether he wanted to play for them in the summer. The brief one-and-a-half-month contract made Iyer available for only a few of the matches. He has played two so far (on July 31 and August 2), scoring 15 and 4 runs in them respectively. In his two overs with the Manchester-based side, he went for 15 runs without picking any wickets. Losing all their five matches, Lancashire are placed at the bottom in Group A.
