India have retained the same squad for the second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on September 22 (Sunday). The second Test will get underway on September 27.
The announcement was made hardly an hour after India won the first Test in Chennai by 280 runs to take a 1-0 in the two-match series.
When the selectors announced the squad only for the first Test before the series, it was anticipated that Jasprit Bumrah would be rested for the second game, but India have instead gone in with the same team.
Bumrah, who bowled 21 overs in the game and picked up five wickets, could still be rested. Mohammed Siraj bowled 20.1 overs, while Akash Deep bowled only 11 overs in the game.
India have Yash Dayal in the squad but his inclusion will depend on the Kanpur surface. India were with three fast bowlers in Chennai, with Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel warming the bench, but that might not be the case in Kanpur.
In the batting department, India are most likely to stick with the same combination. Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant scored centuries in the third innings, but the management would want Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul to get some runs before the New Zealand series and the tour of Australia.
Squad for the second Test: Rohit Sharma (c), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Sarfaraz Khan, Rishabh Pant (wk), Dhruv Jurel (wk), R Ashwin, R Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, Jasprit Bumrah, Yash Dayal.
