India progress to semis of 2024 T20 World Cup; will face England

India will take on Group 2 Runners Up England in the second semi-final at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on June 27 (Thursday)

India have become the third team after England and South Africa to qualify for the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup following their comprehensive win over Australia in St Lucia on June 24 (Monday).

Heading into the clash against Australia, all India needed to do was avoid a heavy defeat to make it to the semi-finals. They needed to either lose by less than 41 runs or ensure that Australia chased down the target they set in more than 15.1 overs to confirm qualification. The Men in Blue went one better and made it five wins in five in this T20 World Cup (one washout) to progress to the semi-finals.

India will now take on the runners up in Group 2, England, in the second semi-final at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on June 27 (Thursday). It’s a repeat of the semi-final of the 2022 T20 World Cup, where the Three Lions hammered the Men In Blue by 10 wickets en route to winning the title for the second time in their history.

The bad news for England is that it’s expected to rain really heavily in Guyana on the day of the semi-final. Should the game be rained out, India will progress to the final by virtue of having finished higher in the Super 8s.

The second semi-final, notably, also does not have a reserve day. Instead of a reserve day, the ICC have allotted another 250 minutes for the game, which means the umpires can wait for about eight hours to finish the contest.
