India registered their quickest 120-plus run chase in the first T20I against Bangladesh in Gwalior on Sunday (October 6). Chasing 128, India finished the game in only 11.5 overs, bettering their previous record which also came against Bangladesh in Mirpur in 2016.
India won the toss and opted to field. Bangladesh lost Litton Das in the first over and struggled for momentum throughout their innings, eventually getting bowled out for 127 in 19.5 overs.
The Men in Blue then began on a positive note, smashing 71 runs in the first six overs for the loss of only two wickets. Suryakumar Yadav scored 29 off 14 balls in this phase before getting out in the sixth over while Sanju Samson contributed 24 off 14 to the quick start.
Samson, however, was involved in miscommunication with Abhishek Sharma where the latter was run out at the non-striker’s end.
Samson extended his contribution to 29 off 19 balls before Hardik Pandya (39 from 16 balls) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (16 off 15 balls) raced the hosts to the finish line.
Hardik played an audacious knock, not in terms of the runs or the strike rate. He played some breathtaking strokes, including a six off the back foot over extra cover against the leg-spinner Rishad Hossain and then a no-look upper cut for four against Taskin Ahmed. Two balls after that upper cut, Hardik finished the game with another four and a six.
Overall, India struck 15 fours and seven sixes, constituting around 78% of their runs in boundaries.
