In today’s cricket, 40 off three overs is chaseable: Tewatia

Rahul Tewatia also opened up on his conversations with Shahrukh Khan and Rashid Khan before creating history

With 35 runs required from the last two overs, Gujarat Titans found themselves in a precarious position. Not only was the target getting steeper, but they also had to get past one of the best bowling units in the competition.

But the mindset of the Titans’ unit is such that they were even ready to chase down 45 runs in the last three overs. In the post-match press conference, Rahul Tewatia opened up on the secret behind the run-chase, stating that ‘two-three’ big hits were always going to change the complexion of the encounter.

“I was batting with Shahrukh and Rashid was still to come. We were telling each other that two or three big hits can change the game. We had to just believe in ourselves and play according to the situation,” Tewatia said in the post-match press conference.

Astonishingly, Gujarat did not score a single six in the last two overs, but despite that, they ended up scoring 37 runs, with six fours, three of Kuldeep Sen’s bowling, and three in the last over against Avesh Khan.

“If you have wickets in hand, then it’s a matter of two to three hits. Going by today’s cricket and the Impact Player Sub, 40 off 3 is chasable,” he added.

Tewatia has largely played as a finisher for the Titans, with 350 runs at the death in 24 innings, where he has struck his runs at 175.88, with 52 boundaries. The all-rounder insisted that he trains according to the situation and revealed that his team gives him the freedom and confidence to go out and perform.

“The team has given me the freedom; they know that I back my strengths. In practice sessions, I try and practice as per match situations, day in and day out,” Tewatia said.

“It’s a long tournament. We lost 2 games, and those many games neither knock teams out of competitions nor do they make them champions. It was just that we tried not repeating the mistakes that we did in previous games,” Tewatia added.

With three wins and three losses, Gujarat Titans are currently placed sixth on the points table in a five-team tussle. The Titans would be hoping that the win against the Royals kick-start a good run for them, with the next clash against Delhi Capitals on April 17 (Wednesday).
