Marcus Trescothick has filled in as England’s interim white-ball coach after Matthew Mott resigned from the job following England’s underwhelming performance in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Trescothick is currently working with the Test team as an assistant coach for the Sri Lanka series and will leave the squad during the third Test to link up with the white-ball side that is slated to take on Australia in three T20Is and five ODIs, starting September 11.
Even though the former England opener will be the head coach for the series, his role is not permanent, something he hints at taking for a longer period of time. "It's not something I'd ever thought about before until I got this opportunity now," Trescothick said, reported ESPN Cricinfo.
"I'm not necessarily thinking any further ahead than the end of the Australia series. I've been very much focused on the job we're doing here.
"You plan your winter: we're off to Pakistan, then New Zealand. I'm so ingrained in that at the moment, I've not really sat down and said, 'right, this is where I'll try to go, this is what I'll try to do'. I'm looking forward to the opportunity, for sure. I'm really excited about doing the job. We'll work it out a little bit more from there."
England are slated to name the squad for the Australia series on Monday, and several new faces are likely to be added to the squad to start the transition process.
Currently, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is working alongside a recruitment firm and is planning to have a full-time coach before they travel to the West Indies for a white-ball series in November in preparation for the Champions Trophy in Pakistan next year.
