ICC World Cup 2023 helps pump USD 1.39 billion into India's economy

The 10-team event was played between October 5-November 19 across 10 Indian cities

The ICC World Cup 2023 hosted by India in 2023 was the biggest cricket World Cup ever as it pumped USD 1.39 billion (INR 11,637 Crores) into the Indian economy, according to a media release by ICC. The tournament was played from October 5 to November 19 across 10 cities. Australia eventually pipped India in the final in Ahmedabad to claim their sixth title.

The tourism sector also benefitted with USD 861.4m of revenue generation through accommodation, travel, transportation and food and beverage, with a massive amount of domestic and foreign tourists influx during the tournament.

As many as 1.25 million spectators attended the World Cup, with nearly 75% attending a 50-over World Cup match for the first time ever. Moreover, 19% of the international attendees visited India for the very first time. 68% of international attendees said that they would recommend India as a tourist destination to friends and family.

The event created 48,000 full and part-time jobs through direct involvement across the hospitality sector, which further contributed USD 18 million.

Speaking of this report gathered by Nielsen, ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice said, "The ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 has demonstrated the significant economic power of cricket, generating economic benefit of USD1.39 billion for India. 

"The event created thousands of jobs and showcased India as a premier tourist destination, proving that ICC events not only engage fans passionately but also contribute significantly to the economies of our host nations."
