De Kock ‘fine’ despite not taking the field in the second innings, confirms Bavuma

Bavuma confirmed post the encounter that no panic buttons need to be pressed with regards to the 30-year-old’s fitness

South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma confirmed that wicket-keeper batter Quinton de Kock is fine and should be ‘good to go’ for the team’s next clash of this World Cup against Australia, after the left-hander did not take the field in the second innings.

De Kock blitzed his first ever World Cup ton in the first innings but stayed back in the dressing room in the second innings, with Heinrich Klaasen instead taking the gloves.

However, Bavuma confirmed post the encounter that no panic buttons need to be pressed with regards to the 30-year-old’s fitness.

“Quinton will be fine, didn't take the field (for the chase) but I think he will be fine (for the next game),” Bavuma said at the post-match presentation.

Bavuma, who joined the squad late due to personal reasons (he missed the warm-up matches) said that he was pleased with his side’s clinical showing on the day. The Proteas, after posting a record-breaking 428 batting first on a belter of a Delhi wicket, bowled out Sri Lanka for 326 to register a thumping 102-run victory.

“Wanted to win the game and that's exactly what we did. It was a clinical performance and give us good confidence going into the next game. Very happy with the showing,” the South Africa skipper said.

Bavuma further said that the conditions posed a nice challenge to his side, and revealed that he was pleased with the way his team adapted. South Africa next play in Lucknow, and the 33-year-old insisted that they’d do well to take some key learnings from Saturday’s encounter.

“It did seam a bit under lights, but the ball was coming on nicely and you could see how they (the batters) were able to use the pace nicely.

“It was all about adjusting to the conditions and we thought it is going to be a bit variable in the second half. If we can take these learnings and we need to adapt whatever is in front of us,” the Proteas skipper said.

South Africa have four days off before their next encounter against Australia, at the Ekana stadium in Lucknow on Thursday (October 12th). The thumping victory on Saturday has given them a huge NRR boost (+2.040)
