ICC rates New York, Trindiad pitches at T20 World Cup 2024 'unsatisfactory'

The pitch in Trinidad hosted the semi-final clash between Afghanistan and South Africa

The pitches for the first two matches of the T20 World Cup 2024 in New York and the semi-final clash between South Africa and Afghanistan have been rated 'unsatisfactory' by the ICC.

In those games at the Nassau County Stadium, New York, Sri Lanka were bundled out for 77 against South Africa, while in the next game, Ireland were bowled out for 96 against India a couple of days later.

In that game, Rohit Sharma had to retire hurt after Josh Little hit him on his arm, and Rishabh Pant and Harry Tector also received similar blows.

The drop-in pitches, which were brought in from Adelaide, were made ready in five months, and after these incidents, the ICC too admitted that the pitches were substandard, further adding that the short turnaround time in New York didn't help their cause as many as eight matches were played in two weeks.

The pitch at the Brian Lara Academy in Tarouba was not great even before the semi-final. In a group stage game, West Indies scored 149 and had New Zealand tottering at 30/5 at one point.

The ICC rates the pitches on these grounds: very good, good, satisfactory, unsatisfactory and unfit. The pitch for the other semi-final between India and England at the Providence was rated "satisfactory," while the pitch for the clash between India and South Africa at the Kensington Oval was rated "very good."
