5 highlights from India's Super Over win over Sri Lanka to complete clean sweep

Missed the low-scoring thriller? Worry not, we have got you covered in this recap

India lose wickets upfront

Asked to bat first, India suffered a poor start, losing Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, Rinku Singh and Suryakumar Yadav within 22 balls inside the powerplay. 30/4 in six overs, it is India’s second-worst powerplay score against Sri Lanka in T20Is. Their lowest score on this metric is 29/4 in Colombo in 2021.

Gill, Parag, Washington drag India to 137

At 48/5, India found some stability in a 54-run partnership between Shubman Gill (39 off 37) and Riyan Parag (26 off 18). Gill and Parag were out in quick succession. Later, Washington Sundar scored 25 off 18 balls, taking India to a competitive total of 137/9 in 20 overs.

The Sri Lankan spinners picked 6/107 in 14 overs between them. Maheesh Theekshana was the pick of the spinners, with figures of 3/28.

Sri Lanka’s efficient start

Sri Lanka had two 50-run partnerships at the top of the order. First, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis batted cautiously, adding 58 off 53 balls for the opening wicket. For the second wicket, Mendis and Kusal Perera forged a 52-run stand from 39 deliveries.

Sri Lanka were 108/1 in 15 overs, gaining pole position in the run chase.

Same old Sri Lankan batting collapse

The innings went south once Ravi Bishnoi returned for his final over in the 16th over of the chase. He dismissed Kusal Mendis, and Washington Sundar followed with back-to-back strikes in the subsequent overs, opening the door for India.

Skipper Suryakumar Yadav then summoned Rinku Singh and himself for the final two overs. An unlikely bowling pair, they conceded only eight runs between them while picking four wickets. Sri Lanka lost seven wickets for 29 runs in the last five overs. The game was eventually tied, with Sri Lanka restricted to 137/8.

The shortest Super Over

Sri Lanka lost both their wickets in the first half of the Super Over with Kusal Perera and Pathum Nissanka caught at the ropes off their first delivery. Chasing only three, Suryakumar Yadav swept an awry delivery from Theekshana. Asitha Fernando misfielded it at fine leg, allowing a boundary and an easy win in the end for the visitors.

India won the series 3-0, completing a clean sweep
