Winners of the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) Gujarat Titans announced former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel as assistant and batting coach of the side. This development comes after there were speculations of the overhauling of the coaching staff at the start of the season.
Parthiv, who previously worked as a talent scout for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL after retiring from his playing career, has been a commentator for India’s host broadcaster Jiocinema, which also holds the digital rights of the IPL.
Parthiv will join the Titans coaching staff led by Ashish Nehra as head coach, Vikram Solanki as Director of Cricket and Aashish Kapoor as assistant coach.
The Titans, who did not make the playoffs for the first time since their debut in the league in the 2022 edition, retained skipper Shubman Gill, Afghan superstar Rashid Khan and domestic stars in Sai Sudharsan, Rahul Tewatia and Shahrukh Khan.
“With a distinguished 17-year career as a former Indian wicketkeeper-batter, Parthiv brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the team,” a Titans’ statement endorsing Parthiv’s appointment read.
“Parthiv’s insights into batting techniques and strategies will play a crucial role in enhancing the players’ skills. Parthiv, who is known for his sharp cricketing acumen and ability to mentor young talent, will strengthen the coaching staff and contribute to player development and performance," the statement added further.
Along with 25 Tests, 38 ODIs and two T20Is for India, Parthiv featured in 139 IPL matches for six different franchises since the start of the league in 2008 till 2019. The left-handed batter scored 2848 runs with 13 fifties to his name. He also took 69 catches and did 16 stumpings as a wicketkeeper in the league.
