Glamorgan fall short of record chase by one run as match ends in tie

Chasing 593, Glamorgan fell short of a record chase by just one run against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham

The 2024 edition of the County Championship continues to tumble records, with Glamorgan posting the third-highest total in a run-chase (592) against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham on Wednesday (July 3), chasing 593.

Glamorgan went to the final day with their scorecard reading 222/3, needing 370 runs for a famous win. Stellar efforts from Sam Northeast (187), Marnus Labuschagne (119) and Mason Crane (43) took Glamorgan to within touching distance of a record chase.

However, needing one run from the last ball for a famous win, Gloucestershire’s wicketkeeper James Bracey pulled off an incredible glove-less catch to send the crowd into a frenzy. It was the first tied clash in the County Championship over the last six years, earning both teams 11 points apiece.

"I'm extremely disappointed to be honest, we should probably have won the game, though as it settles in we'll probably see it as eight points gained going into the last ball rather than eight lost," Bracey told BCC Sport Bristol following the tie.

"(After the first innings) you wouldn't have seen it going to the last ball with a chase close to 600, so it's pretty remarkable on all counts," he added.

While it was the highest-ever score in a fourth innings at the County Championship, Glamorgan narrowly missed out on besting West Zone’s winning total of 541/7 by one run, which would have made it the highest chase in the fourth innings. Elsewhere, Somerset chased down 410, which became their second-highest successful run chase, led by a Tom Abell 152.
