In the wake of Gary Kirsten’s sudden resignation as Pakistan’s white-ball coach on October 28 (Monday), just a day after the new ODI and T20I captain was announced, Jason Gillespie, the red-ball coach, was handed added responsibility of coaching the white-ball side on their tour of Australia.
A few members of the squad for the Australia tour departed on October 27, while a few others were scheduled to depart on October 28, and Kirsten was supposed to link up with them. Now, instead of Kirsten, the former Australia pacer will be in charge of the team’s training and coaching.
“Jason Gillespie will coach the Pakistan men’s cricket team on next month’s white-ball tour of Australia after Gary Kirsten submitted his resignation, which was accepted,” the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said in a media release on October 29.
However, the release did not clarify whether Gillespie will remain the interim coach until another candidate is found in what is going to be the most important six months in Pakistan cricket’s last two decades. They are scheduled to host the ICC Champions Trophy, their first-ever ICC event since the 1996 ODI World Cup.
PCB also failed to give any details on who would coach the team that will depart on a tour of Zimbabwe right after the end of the Australia series. While the Australian tour will commence with the first ODI on November 4, the tour of Zimbabwe, all of the matches which will be played in Bulawayo, will begin on November 24.
