ECB Names New Women's Coach: Will WPL Winner Rescue England's Dwindling Fortunes?

The coach could be key to England’s Women’s World Cup campaign in India, given that she has won two WPL titles with MI

After sacking their coach, Jon Lewis, and seeking the resignation of all-formats skipper Heather Knight for the 0-16 drubbing in Women's Ashes 2024-25, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) made one more change to bring refreshing energy into England’s set-up ahead of the Women’s World Cup 2025 in India.

They appointed two-time World Cup winner and five-time Women’s Ashes winner, former captain and one of the most successful women cricketers to be part of the world game, Charlotte Edwards, as the head coach of the team.

Edwards could be key to the team’s campaign in India, given that she has already won two Women’s Premier League (WPL) titles with Mumbai Indians (MI).

The 45-year-old, who has a trophy named after her in England domestic cricket, is excited to have the Three Lions back on her chest and would do anything to add more laurels to her already magnanimous career, in which she served the English team as a player for 19 years.

"I am so delighted to once again be part of the leadership of the England Women's cricket team, and I cannot wait to take this team forward and drive us to success," Edwards was quoted as saying in a statement by the ECB.

"It means the world to me to have the Three Lions on my chest once again. Leading England as captain was my life for 10 years, and I will forever be passionate about this team and our legacy. We have such a talented group of players, and I am excited about working with them and improving them both as individuals and as a team,” she added.

However, Edwards’ task is cut out as her team will be up against the West Indies and India in a bilateral series at home ahead of the World Cup in India.
