Dwayne Bravo announces retirement from CPL after 2024 season

At present, Bravo is the highest wicket-taker in CPL as well as overall T20 cricket

Dwayne Bravo, the legendary West Indian cricketer with the most T20 wickets, has announced his retirement from the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) following the ongoing season. He is currently playing for the Trinbago Knight Riders in the recently started 2024 season. The 40-year-old posted his decision on Instagram hours before TKR’s opening game against St Kitts & Nevis Patriots.

"It's been a great journey. This season will be my last one," Bravo wrote. "TKR is the place where everything started for me and will end with my team."

Bravo is one of the most prolific CPL players, winning five titles in the competition, including three with TKR. Besides being the highest wicket-taker in T20 cricket overall (630 at present), Bravo also has the most wickets in CPL history, picking 128 wickets in 103 matches at an economy of 8.7.

The all-rounder has played seven seasons in a row for the Trinidad & Tobago-based franchise (T&T Redsteels earlier) since the tournament's inception in 2013. Bravo won four titles in that stint, including the 2020 season. Bravo then moved to the Patriots, seeking new challenges, and led the franchise to their maiden title. He turned their fortunes upside down, given the franchise had finished with the wooden spoon in the previous season. Bravo then returned to TKR in 2023.

Bravo ended his T20I career after West Indies’ dismal T20 World Cup campaign in 2021 but continued to ply his trade in the franchise circuit. In IPL, he played for Chennai Super Kings in 2022 and then took on the bowling coach’s 2023 onwards. However, this year, he represented MI Emirates in the International League T20 and Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket.

Bravo would like to add another CPL trophy to his cabinet and put TKR back on the winning track. They last won the title in 2020 and finished second on the points table last season but lost in the final.

Bravo will continue being a part of the action in other parts of the globe after CPL 2024. He is currently contracted with MI Emirates, who have retained him ahead of the third season of ILT20 in the UAE. He will reunite with his TKR teammates, Kieron Pollard and Nicholas Pooran, there.
