South Africa’s batting coach, JP Duminy, made an unexpected appearance in the third One-Day International against Ireland in Abu Dhabi on October 7 (Monday).
The 40-year-old, who retired from all forms of cricket in 2019, came in as a substitute fielder with some of the South African players feeling the wrath of the Abu Dhabi heat. They had to go out due to fatigue and heat exhaustion and that brought Duminy onto the field.
Duminy last played for South Africa in 2019. The left-handed middle-order batter, who was more than a handy offspinner, played 46 Tests, 199 ODIs and 81 T20Is for the Proteas. He scored more than 9000 runs across three formats and also picked up 132 wickets.
The Proteas won the first two ODIs by 139 and 174 runs respectively and took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
