Dulip Samaraweera facing CA probe for allegedly misbehaving with female player

Samaraweera, 52, elder brother of legendary Sri Lankan batter Thilan, has worked with Victoria women’s side for 16 years (from 2008 to 2024)

Former Sri Lanka batter Dulip Samaraweera, who played seven Tests and five ODIs between 1993 and 1995, is reportedly facing a Cricket Australia (CA) probe amid allegations of serious misconduct towards a female player.

According to the Herald Sun, Samaraweera has been accused of alleged historic conduct relating to the said player. CA’s integrity department is believed to be dealing with the matter.

Samaraweera, 52, elder brother of legendary Sri Lankan batter Thilan, has worked with Victoria women’s side for 16 years (from 2008 to 2024).

He was the specialist batting coach for ten years between 2008 and 2018, after which he became the state side’s assistant coach. He became the head coach of Victoria last year but stepped down from the role in March after reportedly being denied an appointment he wanted to make, due to conflict of interest.

Samaraweera is also the long-term assistant coach of Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) franchise Melbourne Stars.

“Cricket Victoria are unable to comment on the proceedings as they are currently underway, we will make comment on the proceedings at the appropriate time,” Cricket Victoria chief Nick Cummins told the Herald Sun.

At Victoria, Samaraweera was replaced by Andrew Christie. He is said to have been in line to take charge of the Australia ‘A’ women’s team against India ‘A’ earlier this month, but is believed to have been not considered once the allegations surfaced.

The allegations, which have come to light now, are yet to be publicly addressed by the 52-year-old.
