On September 13 (Friday), Shreyas Iyer picked a wicket for the first time in first-class cricket in almost six years. India A started their second dig in the most disdainful manner, scoring 115 runs in the 28 overs but that’s when Iyer introduced himself into the attack.
Off his first ball, the 29-year-old picked up Mayank Agarwal’s wicket, bowling off-spin. It was a slightly flighted delivery, leading to the Karnataka batter driving one uppishly. Iyer took a solid catch in his follow-through to remove Mayank.
The Mumbai batter last took a wicket in 2018 when he removed Saurashtra’s Chetan Sakariya, and his next wicket came five years, eight months, and 22 days later. It was Iyer’s fifth first-class wicket, with his other scalps including Quinton de Kock and Keshav Maharaj during his time with the Indian ‘A’ team.
Earlier in the clash, India D’s captain did not trouble the scorers, posting a seven-ball duck. His duck came after he was snubbed by the selectors for India’s upcoming first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai.
