Duleep Trophy: Shreyas Iyer bounces back with counter-attacking fifty

The India D skipper got to his fifty off just 37 deliveries but was dismissed three balls later by Mukesh Kumar

After a duck in the first innings, Shreyas Iyer has made a useful contribution in the ongoing Duleep Trophy 2024, with a 40-ball 50 against India B in Anantapur on September 21 (Saturday). His innings was glittered with seven fours and a six. He had scored a duck in the first innings of the previous match against India A as well before slamming 41 in the second essay.

He got to his fifty - his 32nd in first-class cricket -  off just 37 deliveries but was dismissed by Mukesh Kumar three balls later. Iyer was particularly severe against his Mumbai teammate Mohit Avasthi, against whom he slammed 22 off just 10 deliveries. Navdeep Saini went conceded 17 off 11, but Mukesh kept the India D captain in check, conceding just 11 off 19.

In the first innings, India D rode on a superb century by Sanju Samson (106) and fifties from Devdutt Padikkal (50), KS Bharat (52) and Bhui (56) to put up 349. They got a first-inning lead of 67 despite another ton by Abhimanyu Easwaran (116) and Washington Sundar (87), who scored some vital runs down the order.

India D are in desperate need of a win here as they are yet to register a point on the board. They lost their first game against India C by four wickets and followed that up with a 186-run loss against India A.
