Duleep Trophy 2024: Manav Suthar’s five-wicket haul keeps India C ahead

With this feat, the 22-year-old equalled Karnataka’s KP Appanna as only the second left-arm spinner with a five-wicket haul in Anantapur

Manav Suthar of the India C team in the Duleep Trophy 2024, took three wickets in six balls of his two overs against India D on Friday (September 6) to become only the second left-arm spinner to register a five-wicket haul in first-class cricket in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh. With this feat, the 22-year-old equalled Karnataka’s KP Appanna as only the second left-arm spinner with a five-wicket haul in Anantapur.

Suthar, who got one wicket in the first innings of the game, was on fire in the second innings. He first removed Devdutt Padikkal for 56 and broke the biggest partnership (73 runs between Padikkal and Ricky Bhui) of the India D team in the game.

Having tasted blood, the Rajasthan-born got into the groove and removed KS Bharat to get his second wicket. Bhui tried to hold the fort with his 44 but was not able to stop the storm of Suthar.

The tweaker then got into top gear and removed the last three wickets to fall in the day in just six balls. Bhui was followed by Saransh Jain and Arshdeep Singh as India D trotted to the end of the day at 206/8, leading by 202 runs.

Suthar, who has 65 wickets in 14 first-class games to his kitty, will look to finish things up tomorrow and hope that if needed, he could contribute with the bat too and take his team to victory on a wicket that is proving very hard to bat on. Suthar has an average of 30 with the bat, having piled up 488 runs in 21 innings with a best score of unbeaten 96.

Suthar, looked at as a future India prospect, was part of the India A side that played against the touring English Lions in early 2024. He picked eight wickets in two four-day games and also scored an unbeaten 89.
