Dinesh Chandimal equals Angelo Mathews, Dimuth Karunaratne's record

The veteran Sri Lanka batter brought up his 16th Test century in the ongoing match against New Zealand in Galle

Sri Lanka batter Dinesh Chandimal scored his 16th Test century and in the process equalled Angelo Mathews, Dimuth Karunaratne, Tilakaratne Dilshan, and Marvan Atapattu, who, too, have the same number of tons for their country. Chandimal achieved this feat on Day One of the second Test against New Zealand in Galle. This is also his first Test century against the Blackcaps.

Only Aravinda de Silva (20), Mahela Jayawardene (34) and Kumar Sangakkara (38) have scored more centuries than Chandimal. Earlier in the innings, he also brought up his 45th 50-plus score in the format to draw level with Sanath Jayasuriya.

This is also his sixth Test ton in Galle, a venue where he has scored nearly 2,000 runs. Colombo (SSC) is the only other venue where the batter has multiple centuries in the format. Incidentally, Mathews was with him at the crease when he got to his century and put on over 100 for the second wicket with Karunaratne before the latter was run out.

Chandimal scored 30 and 61 in the first Test against New Zealand, which was also held in Galle. The hosts went on to win the match by 63 runs to keep their World Test Championship (WTC) final hopes alive.
