Deandra Dottin registers most four-wicket hauls in Women’s T20 WC

The ‘World Boss’ took four wickets for 22 against New Zealand in the second semifinal of the Women’s T20 World Cup

Deandra Dottin continued her successful campaign at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 as she picked up four wickets for just 22 runs in her four overs against New Zealand in the second semi-final. This was her fourth four-wicket haul in a T20 World Cup match, which is the most for any bowler in the tournament’s history.

New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat first at Sharjah. However, the Windies bowlers didn’t allow the White Ferns top order to access their favourite down the ground scoring areas, and New Zealand scored only 54/2 in the first 10 overs.

Dottin came on to bowl in the 12th over and would have had Georgia Plimmer’s wicket on her first ball. However, Chinelle Henry got injured when she lost the ball in the lights, and it hit her forehead. Dottin compensated on the next delivery by getting Amelia Kerr caught at mid-off.

The all-rounder carried her wicket-taking streak to the next over as well, cleaning up Brooke Halliday with a superb Yorker. Halliday had looked dangerous at 18 off just eight deliveries.

In her next over (17th of the innings), Dottin got two wickets — Maddy Green and Rosemary Mair, both of whom were deceived by slow deliveries on the stump line. This clever mixture of yorkers, short deliveries and slower cutters proved beneficial for the Windies at the end.

Notably, Dottin returned to the Windies setup after announcing her retirement from international cricket. She cited a “non-conducive” team environment as the reason behind her decision.

Since her return, which started with the T20 World Cup, she has scored 82 runs at a strike rate of 167.3 (the highest in the tournament for batters with more than 75 runs), and picked five wickets at an economy of just 5.4 and an average of 7.6 in the tournament.
