In a welcome news for women’s cricket in the Caribbean, Deandra Dottin, who had earlier abruptly announced her retirement from international cricket during the Commonwealth Games in 2022, has taken back her decision to retire.
The allrounder, who has played 270 international matches for the West Indies across the two white-ball formats, will lead the Trinbago Knight Riders side in the upcoming season of the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Notable, she has been out of cricket action since September 2023, and this would be her much-awaited return to the cricket field.
When she retired earlier, she cited the administration of cricket in the West Indies as one of the reasons behind her quitting international cricket. However, as per the statement released by Cricket West Indies (CWI), she has communicated clearly with “various parties in international cricket, including Cricket West Indies President, Dr Kishore Shallow,” and is happy to offer services to Windies Cricket.
“Representing West Indies in international cricket has always been a matter of great pride and passion for me. After a period of reflection and thoughtful dialogue with various parties within Cricket West Indies, including Cricket West Indies President Dr. Kishore Shallow, I am pleased to inform you that I am eager to return to the game that I love, and contribute my utmost to the West Indies women’s team across all formats, with immediate effect,” Dottin said in her statement.
In that statement, she also said she would be keen to mentor young talent in the Caribbean with her reinclusion in the CWI women’s cricket setup.
“I am confident that my experience, maturity, and skills will add value to the team as it has done in the past, and I am prepared to furnish my best efforts in every match and training session to ensure the team’s winning trajectory in international cricket.
Moreover, I am enthusiastic about mentoring younger players and contributing to the overall development of women's cricket in our region,” Dottin enthusiastically remarked in her statement.
The West Indies women will have a camp in August later this year before they begin their campaign in the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh in October.
