David Warner’s international career comes to an end

Warner will bid adieu to the format as the most prolific T20 batter Australia have ever produced, having racked up 3277 runs at an average of 33.44

With Australia crashing out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 following Afghanistan’s win against Bangladesh on June 24 (Monday) at the Arnos Vale Cricket Stadium in St Vincent, David Warner’s international career has officially come to an end.

Warner, who had already announced that the T20 World Cup would be his last international assignment, will bid adieu to the format as the most prolific T20 batter Australia have ever produced, having racked up 3277 runs in 110 matches at an average of 33.44 and a strike rate of 142.5.

The clash against India in St Lucia on June 24 that Australia lost by a margin of 27 runs, ended up as Warner’s final appearance in the Aussie colours.

In a prolific career that spanned over 15 years, Warner has amassed 18,995 international runs across formats and was one of the finest openers in the game's history. Controversy has always been the order of the day in his career, but he remained a jovial cricketer who gained many fans in India as a flagbearer of the Indian Premier League—a tournament that truly liberated him.

There was always a sense of pragmatism to the way Warner batted in international cricket. He never shied away from taking challenges, even at the fag end of his career, where it seemed he lacked the killer instinct that made him such a special performer. As a matter of fact, he ended the T20 World Cup 2024 with 178 runs at an average of 29.66, with two half-centuries to go with it.

"He goes down as our best multi-format player,” said Travis Head after the India clash. “He'll be missed at the top of the order, but let's hope [tonight] is not the end. We'll wait and see but we'll give him a send-off tonight if that is the case later on. It might be a bit of a late one if the fixture finishes the way it has. But a lot has been said about how good Davey has been at the top of the order."

In Test cricket, though, Warner truly had a locus standi. At the top of the order, he redefined the approach to red-ball opening, scoring 8786 runs for Australia with 26 centuries to go with it. When he returned from the sandpaper gate scandal, for which he had to be banned for a year, Warner took the 2019 World Cup by storm, scoring 647 runs at an average of 71.88.
