Curran bats for bowlers wearing protective masks: ‘It can get super dangerous’

At the T20 Blast, Curran was inches away from suffering a serious face injury that could have potentially derailed his career.

Tom Curran is currently thriving in The Hundred, representing the Oval Invincibles, but it was not too long ago that he endured a scary incident on the field while bowling in the T20 Blast.

Curran was bowling for Surrey against Middlesex when a powerful straight hit from the left-handed Luke Hollman caught him flush in the arm, resulting in a broken left forearm. Curran was lucky that his hand came in the way; that night, he was inches away from suffering a serious face injury that could have potentially derailed his career.

The 29-year-old recalled the harrowing incident in an interview with ESPNcricinfo.

"It was nasty," Curran told ESPNcricinfo, talking about the injury.

"I'm sure you've seen a few things over the years of bowlers getting it smacked back. It could have been so much worse if it had got me in the face that could have done some serious damage, or even the right arm or hand."

Having encountered a close shave, the right-armer admitted that, going forward, it actually won’t be a bad option for bowlers to start wearing protective masks [for the face]. But he admitted that implementing the same will be challenging, since it could potentially hinder mobility.

"It's super dangerous, particularly for some guys. I probably feel like I'm a standard bowler, but there's a lot that when they follow through they get right down, their heads are down, and by the time they look up they won't have had the time to move,” Curran said.

“I'm surprised there haven't been more [injuries], especially the way guys are hitting them now. Maybe guys could start wearing some form of masks. It's a tough one because you need to be mobile when you are bowling."

For the longest time, Curran in the BBL has been associated with Sydney Sixers, but next season, he will turn up for the Melbourne Stars after signing a two-year pre-draft deal with them.

The right-armer asserted that he felt that there was a need for a change, and expressed that he liked the stability that came with the two-year deal that was offered to him.

"I got a decent idea that they [Sixers] were looking at other [overseas] options and they couldn't commit at the same sort of [level] that the Stars were showing,” Curran said.

“It just felt [like] the right decision, a good time for a change. And with the multi-year contracts, I feel like a person who wants to be loyal to teams, you don't want to be chopping and changing."
