Rohit Sharma may have retired from T20 Internationals (T20I) following India's historic win in Barbados which secured their second T20 World Cup title, but he is certainly not done with the other two formats just yet.
Congratulating the Indian team on the title, BCCI secretary Jay Shah has confirmed Rohit will lead India in the Champions Trophy and also in the World Test Championship (WTC) final (if they qualify). He further adds that he is confident of India winning both the tournaments under Rohit.
“After the T20 World Cup win, the next target is to win the WTC final and the Champions Trophy. I have full confidence that under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, we will be champions in both the tournaments,” Shah said in a video message.
“This was our third final within a year. On June 11 last year, we lost the WTC final. On November 19, after winning 10 matches, we won hearts but failed to win the ODI World Cup. But as I had said earlier this year in Rajkot, India proceeded to win hearts and the World Cup under Rohit’s leadership,” Shah added.
The Champions Trophy will be held in February-March next year in Pakistan, and the WTC final will be held in June. India have a good chance of making it to the WTC final, given they currently sit top of the table. They have Bangladesh, New Zealand and Australia to contend with before confirming their place in the final.
India are aiming to play their third successive WTC final. They lost to New Zealand in 2021, and more recently, in 2023, Australia bested them in the summit clash.
