Bangladesh suffered a big blow before the second Test against South Africa, beginning October 29 in Chattogram.
Their debutant half-centurion from the first game, wicketkeeper-batter Jaker Ali, got concussed while training at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium on Sunday, October 27.
The Bangladesh physio Bayjedul Islam Khan was quoted by ESPN Cricinfo saying that, “Jaker Ali suffered a concussion while batting in practice yesterday [Sunday]. He has a history of concussion and is still showing symptoms. Given his previous concussion record, recovery may take some time. Based on the clinical findings, he has been ruled out of the second Test.”
Jaker’s fifty in the second innings gave Bangladesh some hopes of a fight back in the Test, however, the Proteas led by Kagiso Rabada’s sensational bowling were too rampant for the Tigers who succumbed to a seven wicket defeat.
Wicketkeeper batter Mahidul Islam Ankon has been called in as his replacement. He has three first-class centuries to his name for the Dhaka division, along with a recent 118 against Sylhet Division last week.
Earlier, Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto shocked everyone when he announced that he plans to leave the team's captaincy after this Test series because of the dip in his form. South Africa won the first Test by seven wickets and took a 1-0 lead in the series, with Shanto registering scores of 7 and 23.
