Coetzee handed demerit point for dissent against umpire’s decision

The incident occurred while Coetzee was bowling and the umpire adjudged one ball as wide

Match referee Andy Pycroft gave the South Africa seamer Gerald Coetzee one demerit point for dissenting from the umpire's decision during the second match of the four-match T20I series against India.

The incident occurred while Coetzee was bowling, and the umpire adjudged one ball as wide. The Proteas bowler did not take a liking to the decision and mouthed his displeasure, which the match referee considered dissent.

According to article 2.8 of the ICC Code, Coetzee was "showing dissent at an umpire's decision during an international match". Since Coetzee accepted his punishment, there was no need for a formal hearing.

In other matches, the Netherlands skipper Scott Edwards was also faced with sanctions for breaching the code of conduct. He showed his bat to the umpire after being given out LBW and then also threw the bat and gloves on the ground in frustration.

Sufiyan Mehmood of Oman was fined 10 per cent of his match fees for gesturing Netherlands’ Teja Nidamanuru to walk towards the dressing room after dismissing him.
