Sri Lanka have announced a 16-man squad for the three-match T20I series against India, with middle-order batter Charith Asalanka named the new skipper of the side.
In the T20 World Cup two months ago, Sri Lanka were led by Wanindu Hasaranga but the all-rounder stepped down as skipper in the aftermath of the team’s disappointing showing in the mega event. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) did not announce a new skipper immediately, but it’s now been confirmed that Asalanka will lead the team for the T20Is against India.
Asalanka has already led Sri Lanka twice in T20Is, in the bilateral series against Bangladesh earlier this year.
The 16-man squad sees the return of two veterans in Kusal Perera and Dinesh Chandimal, both of whom were not part of the T20WC squad. Both Perera and Chandimal had good Lanka Premier League 2024 seasons: while Perera averaged 42 and struck at 169, Chandimal amassed 287 runs at an average of 28.70 and strike rate of 169.
There is also a return for Avishka Fernando, who was the third-highest run-getter in LPL 2024, wth 374 runs to his name.
Two senior players in Angelo Mathews and Dhananjaya de Silva, who were part of the T20WC squad, have been left out.
And there is a call-up for pace-bowling all-rounder Chamindu Wickramasinghe, who was a standout performer in LPL 2024, averaging 62.00 with the bat while also taking 7 wickets.
The three-match T20I series will kick-off in Pallekle on July 27 (Saturday).
