In a groundbreaking move, a seating zone at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) will be named after Sri Lanka Women captain and Sydney Thunder batter Chamari Athapaththu, the Sydney Thunder announced on Thursday (November 16). The specially dedicated seating zone will be unveiled for the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) derby clash on November 26.
The initiative aims to recognise Athapaththu's rich contribution to Sydney Thunder - a season in which she has scored 374 runs at 41.55 along with a strike-rate of 134.05, which also includes four fifties in nine innings. Furthermore, this also underlines Thunder's "commitment to fostering a multicultural cricket community and creating unforgettable experiences for Sri Lanka cricket fans."
Speaking of her excitement about the initiative, Athapaththu said, "I am truly honoured and thrilled to have a dedicated seating zone named after me at the Sydney Cricket Ground. It's a special moment for me, and I am looking forward to the match at this iconic venue. I hope 'Chamari Bay' becomes a gathering place for cricket enthusiasts and brings people together to celebrate the spirit of the game."
Thunder are currently fourth in the WBBL table with 13 points from 10 games. The team finishing top of the table make it straight to the final. Thunder, as things stands, will play in the Eliminator (3 vs 4). The winner of that game will play the second-placed side in the Challenger to determine the second finalist.
