Chamari Athapaththu to lead hosts Sri Lanka in Women’s Asia Cup 2024

Sri Lanka enter the tournament as one of the favourites having defeated big teams like England and South Africa away from home in T20Is series

On July 17 (Wednesday), Chamari Athapaththu was announced as the skipper of the 15-member Sri Lanka squad for the Women’s Asia Cup 2024. Sri Lanka will open their campaign against Bangladesh on July 20 (Saturday). 

“The Cricket Selection Committee selected the following 15-member national squad to take part in the Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2024,” Sri Lanka Cricket said in a statement. 

Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Harin Fernando approved the squad. The Women’s Asia Cup will commence on the 19th July, 2024, at the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium, Dambulla.

Apart from Athapaththu, 18-year-old Vishmi Gunaratne, who scored 74 runs in three innings at an average of 37, is also in the squad as expected. Other members from the successful tour of South Africa in early 2024, where they beat the hosts 2-1 in the T20Is series and drew the ODI series 1-1, are also part of this Asia Cup squad. 

Harshita Madavi, who scored 104 runs with an average of 52 on the South Africa tour, will be leading the middle order, while the likes of Kavisha Dilhari will also play a supporting role. 

Apart from the impressive South Africa tour, Sri Lanka beat the West Indies women 3-0 in an ODI series at home. Though they had lost the T20I series. However, Sri Lanka entered the tournament as one of the favourites, having defeated big teams like England and South Africa away from home in the T20I series.
