Cricket Australia (CA) has announced that there will be three day-night Sheffield Shield matches, as at least one pink-ball Test is played in the Australian summer each year. The matches will be played at the Adelaide Oval, Gabba, Brisbane, and the Bellerive Oval, Hobart, which have been chosen as the venues for the day-night Tests Down Under in the past.
However, the regular members of the Test side will not be able to participate in the tournament as they will be busy with their international commitments, even though they are expected to feature in at least one Sheffield Shield match ahead of the Test series against India.
South Australia will take on Western Australia at the Adelaide Oval in a pink-ball match on November 23, two weeks before the day-night Test against India at the same venue. With the Test series set to begin on November 22, none of the regular Australian players will be part of that Shield match.
Queensland will take on Victoria at the Gabba on November 24, which will feature Scott Boland and Michael Neser (if not picked by Australia) who have the experience of playing day-night Tests for Australia. The third match will involve Tasmania and New South Wales at the Bellerive Oval.
"We are always exploring opportunities to further enhance the experience for domestic players and best-prepare them for the challenges of international cricket," CA's head of national teams, Ben Oliver, said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
"Playing first-class matches at Test venues is important, and so too is exposure to day-night conditions which have become a feature of the Australian Test summer over the past decade. With that in mind, we felt it was the right time to re-introduce day-night Sheffield Shield matches for our next group of international cricketers."
