Jasprit Bumrah the most valuable Indian cricketer right now: Ashwin

The paceman missed the 2022 T20 World Cup and the last WTC final due to a back injury but has been in phenomenal form since making his return

India’s ace offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin said the country should celebrate Jasprit Bumrah even more and feels the 30-year-old paceman is “the most valuable Indian cricketer right now”. Ashwin said India have always been a batter-dominated country but is glad that the people understand how important Bumrah is to Indian cricket.

Speaking to journalist Vimal Kumar on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said, “India has always been a batsman-dominated country, and it’s never going to change. But I am so glad and happy that we are celebrating Jasprit Bumrah. Jasprit Bumrah is a once-in-a-generation bowler. We should celebrate him even more."

“We Chennai people appreciate bowlers a lot. He was here for an event as a chief guest 4-5 days ago. We gave him a Rajni treatment. We [Chennai people] treat bowlers very nicely. He should be treated as a champion. I don’t want to name it, but Jasprit Bumrah is the most valuable Indian cricketer right now.”

Bumrah missed the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia and the last World Test Championship final in 2023 due to a back injury but has been in phenomenal form since making his return. The right-arm fast bowler picked up 20 wickets @ 18.65 in the 2023 ODI World Cup and was then named 2024 T20 World Cup’s Player of the Tournament.

He claimed 15 wickets at an insane average of 8.26 in the tournament, which India won by defeating South Africa in the finale. Overall, Bumrah has picked up 159 wickets in 36 Tests @ 20.69, 149 wickets in 89 ODIs @ 23.55 and 89 wickets in 70 T20Is @ 17.74.

The paceman is part of India’s squad for the first Test against Bangladesh, starting on September 19 in Chennai.
