Body blow for Australia as Cameron Green is in doubt for India Tests

Reports suggest that Green would need surgery, which could rule him out of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy

On October 10, Australia were dealt with a body blow, with Cameron Green set to be in major doubt for the five-match Test series against India, which begins in November. Green, who complained of a back injury during the five-match ODI series against England, was hopeful of featuring just as a batter.

However, those hopes have vanished, with ESPNCricinfo reporting that a ‘back surgery’ could be emerging, which would rule him out of the entire Test series against India. The report also added that Cricket Australia's medical and high-performance team is also looking at a non-surgery option, making him available as a pure batter for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Green’s injury could make way for Steve Smith to return to his favourable No.4 position, where he has amassed 5966 runs at an average of 61.50. But that would mean that Australia would be on the lookout for an opener.

Marcus Harris, Cameron Bancroft, and Matt Renshaw are front runners for that opener spot anyway. However, New South Wales’ Sam Konstas, with his twin century against South Australia, might also be in the running, owing to his youth.

From an all-rounder perspective, rumours suggest that it could be a duel between Beau Webster and Aaron Hardie, with the latter already part of Australia’s white-ball scheme of things. But Webster’s record at first-class level is undeniably great, with a century as late as on October 9 against Victoria.
