Ben Stokes reveals reason behind skipping IPL 2025 mega auction

“I want to wear this England shirt for as long as I can,” said Stokes

Expectations that Ben Stokes would be part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction were quashed when the all-rounder pulled out of the shortlist. While it was a surprise for many, it was a logical decision from the English Test skipper, who has an eye on prolonging his Three Lions stint.

Stokes was previously part of the five-time IPL-winning Chennai Super Kings setup the last time he was at the competition and hasn’t played for the last two years. When asked about why Stokes skipped the IPL auction, he pointed out the volume of cricket that’s around the corner.

"[There is] just so much cricket," Stokes told BBC Sport before Christchurch Test. "There's no hiding behind the fact that I'm at the back-end of my career. I obviously want to play as long as I possibly can. Looking after my body and looking after myself as much as I can is key to that."

Unfortunately for Stokes, according to the latest IPL rules, he will not be allowed to play in the competition until 2026 because of his unavailability at the mega auction.

The 33-year-old is already a regular fixture in England’s red-ball setup, and with Brendon McCullum set to take over the white-ball job, there’s a strong rumour that he could return for the Champions Trophy 2025.

But even before the international event, Stokes has signed up to play for MI Cape Town in the third edition of the SA20, which takes place in January.

"[It is about] prioritising games and when I do play - obviously I'm in South Africa this year - so it's about looking at what I've got ahead and making the decision that I think is right for me to be able to prolong my career as long as possible. I want to wear this England shirt for as long as I can."
