BCCI shortlists Lewis, Muzumdar and Arothe for India women head coach

It is yet to be confirmed whether Hrishikesh Kanitkar is part of the shortlist for the prestigious job

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have shortlisted Amol Muzumdar, Tushar Arothe and Jon Lewis for the position of head coach for the Indian women’s team. However, it is yet to be confirmed whether Hrishikesh Kanitar, who was part of the Indian women’s setup as the interim head coach is in contention.

Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), the BCCI’s appointed committee, is set to interview the candidates on July 1-2 in Mumbai. Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjape and Sulakshana Naik will likely announce the new head coach on or before July 3.

According to reports from ESPNCricinfo, the new coach is likely to be given a two-year deal, with the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh in 2024 and the 50-over World Cup in India in 2025. Since Ramesh Powar’s exit from the position, India have not yet named any permanent replacement.

Muzumdar, a domestic titan, left his role as Mumbai’s head coach and stands as a prime candidate for the role. Arothe is a familiar name in the Indian women’s circuit, having been part of the Indian women’s setup between April 2017 and July 2018.

Lewis, who is currently involved with the England women’s setup as the head coach, too, stands a firm chance. Earlier in the year, Lewis was involved with the UP Warriorz franchise, wherein they unearthed Parshavi Chopra and gave a new life to Kiran Navgire, understanding the Indian landscape.

India’s next assignment is set to begin on July 9 against Bangladesh.
