Bavuma retires hurt after sustaining soft tissue injury on his left elbow

The South African skipper dived full stretch to complete a run but hurt himself in the process

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma sustained a soft tissue injury on his left elbow while batting in the second One-Day International against Ireland on October 4 (Friday).

The incident occurred on the fourth delivery of the 12th over when the right-handed opener pushed one towards mid-off and took off for a quick single. He eventually had to dive full stretch to cross the line but hurt himself in the process.

Bavuma got some taping on his left arm but decided to leave the field only a couple of deliveries later. The 34-year-old retired hurt at the score of 35 off 39 and didn’t return to bat.

“He’s got a soft tissue injury on his elbow so he won’t be fielding, so Rassie will be doing captaincy in his absence,” said Kyle Verreynne after the first innings.

His departure didn’t affect South Africa’s batting as Tristan Stubbs smoked 112* off 81 deliveries to propel them to 343/4 in 50 overs at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Bavuma has struggled with injuries in recent times, and South Africa would hope that he recovers on time for the two-match Test series in Bangladesh, starting on October 21.
