Bangladesh register their third away series win in Test history

The last overseas series of two matches or more that Bangladesh won was against West Indies in 2009

Bangladesh have defeated Pakistan by six wickets in the second Test of the two-match series at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on September 3 (Tuesday) to win a Test series away from home for the third time in their history. This is Bangladesh’s only second overseas Test series win in a series involving two games or more. Their last overseas series win (2+ matches) came back in 2009 in West Indies, where they beat the Men in Maroon 2-0. In 2021, they won a one-off Test against Zimbabwe in Harare.

Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim are the only two players in this Bangladesh side who were also present in the side that won in the West Indies.

For Pakistan, the winless streak at home has now increased to 10 games. This is the first instance of them losing a Test series against Bangladesh.

Bangladesh started the fifth day’s play at 42/0, needing 143 more to win with all the wickets intact. Pakistan pacers showed some discipline as they got two quick wickets of the openers. However, Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mominul Haque added 57 for the third wicket before Salman Ali Agha removed the former.

With only 58 more needed to win, Rahim joined Mominul in the middle. They braved some nervy moments, but Mominul got out with 32 more needed to win the game.

Rahim was then joined by the experienced Shakib, and it was only fitting that those two, who were part of their team's first-ever overseas series win 15 years ago, saw the Tigers through to a memorable win in Pakistan as well. Opener Zakir Hasan top-scored for the visitors with 40.

This is Pakistan's second whitewash at home in the span of two years. In 2022, they had been beaten 3-0 by the Ben Stokes-led English side.
