Bangladesh Extend Head Coach's Contract To 2027 ODI World Cup
Simmons, who was first appointed in October 2024, had his contract up till the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 only.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on March 26 (Wednesday), announced the extension of the contract for the head coach of their senior men’s team, Phil Simmons, up till the ODI World Cup 2027, which will be in October-November of that year.
Simmons, who was first appointed in October 2024, had his contract up till the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 only. However, it was surprising that, despite a very poor outing in the tournament, Bangladesh decided to continue with Simmons.
"I am delighted to be given the opportunity to work with Bangladesh cricket on a long-term basis. The talent within this team is undeniable, and I believe we have the potential to achieve great things together. I am looking forward to the journey ahead," Simmons was quoted as saying in a statement released by the board after the extension of his contract.
"Having worked with some exceptional players already, I can see the immense promise in this squad. Their skill and passion for the game inspire me daily. Together, we can take Bangladesh cricket to new heights and create something truly special," added the 61-year-old.
Simmons, who was a batting all-rounder during his playing days, represented the West Indies in 26 Tests and 143 ODIs. He has so far coached Zimbabwe (2004), Ireland (between 2007 and 2015), West Indies (twice) and Afghanistan (2018 to 2019).
