Having played just two first-class games since 2019 and only six since 2017, Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa is harbouring hopes of representing the country in the longest format and earning the Baggy Green he so earnestly desires.
"I think, realistically, [I'm] still a chance to play Test cricket. If I was playing a lot of Shield cricket right now with the way I'm bowling, the bowler I am, I think I'd be fine, I'd be doing well. The few games I have played in the last couple of years are suggestive of that,” Zampa said on the Final Word podcast.
Currently part of the table toppers Oval Invincibles in The Hundred, Zampa is the joint leading wicket-taker and has his eyes set on Australia’s subcontinent Test tours in 2025. However, the 32-year-old is fully aware of the talk that might surround his selection, if it happened, for the longest format.
"Even if I do get picked in the upcoming subcontinent tours, people will say, well his record is averaging 46 with the ball, it's not good enough, people will say that I'm sure, but if I do get picked I'll know that the way I feel like I'm bowling, it'll be fine," he said.
The New South Wales player, who plied his trade for South Australia as well, confirmed that he has signed a two-year deal with Cricket Australia as part of central contracts and, therefore, wants to play every game possible, even if that means side-lining franchise cricket.
“I'm lucky enough to have signed a two-year contract with Australia and it's based on wanting to play every game for Australia,” said the man with 111 First-Class wickets in 40 games.
