Former Pakistan skipper Younis Khan advised Babar Azam to take inspiration from India's Virat Kohli, who stepped down as captain on his own terms. Kohli is one of India's most successful captains, but since he was relieved of his duties, he has taken his batting to another level. Younis believes that's the mantra for Babar too. While Babar is no longer in charge of the Test side, he continues to lead Pakistan in white-ball cricket.
"Babar Azam was made the captain because he was the best player at the time," Younis said, at an event, reported TOI.
"I was there when the decision was made that the team’s best player should be the captain. Our players tend to talk more than they perform. If our top players deliver on the field, the results will be clear to everyone.
"Look at Virat Kohli. He chose to step down from captaincy on his own terms, and now he’s breaking records worldwide. This shows that playing for the country should be the priority. If there’s any energy left, then play for yourself."
In the recent Test series against Bangladesh, Babar was not up to the mark, scoring 0, 22, 11, and 31 in the four innings. As a result, Pakistan lost both Tests against Bangladesh at home.
Babar has gone 16 innings without a Test fifty and has returned to domestic cricket now, playing the Champions One-Day Cup for the Stallions. He started the tournament with a 79-ball 76, allowing his side to register a comfortable 133-run victory over the Lions.
