Australia create history with 14th ODI win in a row

Australia defeated England in the second ODI in Leeds to lead the series 2-0

Australia registered a record-breaking win against England in the second ODI in Leeds on September 21 (Sunday). Beating England by 68 runs, they won their 14th ODI in a row, going past Sri Lanka’s streak of 13 wins which was the record for second-most number of victories on the bounce.

Australia last lost an ODI on October 12, 2023, against South Africa in Lucknow during the 2023 World Cup. They then won nine matches in a row to lift the trophy, blanked West Indies 3-0 in the ODI series in February, and are currently leading the five-match series against England 2- 0. The wins have come under the captaincy of Pat Cummins (World Cup), Steve Smith (vs West Indies) and Mitchell Marsh (versus England).

Australia also hold the record for the longest streak of wins in ODI cricket. They won 21 one-day internationals in a row between January and May 2003 which also included their unbeaten run in the 2003 ODI World Cup. All these wins came under the captaincy of Ricky Ponting as designated captain of the squad, barring one, which came under the then vice-captain Adam Gilchrist. It is only co-incidence that Ponting is a part of Sky Sports' commentary team for this ongoing white-ball tour of Australia.

Earlier, Sri Lanka held the record for the second-longest streak, winning 13 games in the build-up to the ODI World Cup last year.

In the second ODI, Australia were bowled out for 270 in 44.4 overs after being asked to bat. Alex Carey (74 off 67 balls) lifted the visitors from 221/9 at one stage to a competitive total. In response, England were bundled out for 202 in 40.2 overs with none of their batters scoring a fifty.
