Ajinkya Rahane's Leicestershire stint comes to an end

The India batter will miss the final two matches of the season after sustaining a "couple of niggles"

India batter Ajinkya Rahane will miss the remainder of the season for Leicestershire due to a "couple of niggles," the club announced on September 16 (Monday). As a result, the veteran batter will miss the final two County matches of the season against Northamptonshire and Derbyshire.

Rahane had a fruitful stay with Leicestershire. He scored 71 on his One-Day Cup debut against Nottinghamshire and overall slammed 378 runs in 10 innings to help his side make it to the semis. Rahane also slammed 202 in the County Championship, including a superb century against Glamorgan earlier this month.

“I have absolutely loved my time with Leicestershire. We played some fantastic cricket, and there are a lot of promising signs for the team heading into next season,” Rahane said in a statement.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed playing alongside my teammates and working with the coaches to improve my game. Meeting the Leicestershire supporters and witnessing their passion for cricket was also a pleasure. Everybody made me feel incredibly welcome, and I would love to return to the Club again in the future."

With the County season behind him, Rahane will now focus on the upcoming domestic season at home, where he is expected to play a vital role for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, which will begin from October 11 onwards. A good performance in the tournament could potentially see the 36-year-old have one last crack at adding to his 85 Test caps, the last of which came in July 2023.
