Adil Rashid becomes third fastest spinner to take 200 ODI wickets

The leg-spinner is also the joint-fastest England bowler to get to the milestone

Adil Rashid notched up his 200th ODI wicket during the second ODI against Australia in Leeds on Saturday (September 21). It was the big wicket of Glenn Maxwell that took Rashid to the milestone in the 28th over of Australia’s innings.

Rashid got there in his 131st innings as an ODI bowler, thus becoming the third fastest spinner to this milestone after Saqlain Mushtaq (101) and Shane Warne (124). He is also the joint fastest England bowler to get to 200 ODI wickets — leveling with Darren Gough (131 innings).

Rashid’s figures in the second ODI read 2/42 in 10 overs with the wickets of Maxwell and Adam Zampa in his kitty. Maxwell began with a first ball six and tried to take on the leg-spinner for another maximum. However, the right-hander couldn’t time the ball well due to the slow nature of the surface and miscued his shot to the deep mid-wicket fielder Jacob Bethell

Rashid is already England’s most prolific spinner in ODIs, being the first tweaker to get to 200 wickets. The next on the list of most wickets by an English bowler is Moeen Ali, with 111 ODI wickets.

Overall, he is the third-highest wicket-taker for England in ODIs, behind James Anderson (269) and Gough (234). He was the rare silver lining in England’s disastrous ODI World Cup campaign where the Yorkshire man picked 15 wickets (the highest for the team) at 27.5 runs apiece.
