Mohammed Shami, who injured his ankle during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, has decided to go for surgery on his right Achilles tendon in London on Monday. That has effectively ruled him out of the impending Indian Premier League 2024, for which he was going to play a big role for Gujarat Titans.
"Looking forward to getting back on my feet," Shami wrote on Instagram alongside a picture of him after the surgery.
Shami came into the Playing XI in the World Cup after Hardik Pandya was ruled out with an injury and the pacer showed a lion's heart to play with injections throughout the tournament. But after the World Cup final against Australia on November 19, the Bengal pacer missed the entire South Africa tour, followed by the home series against England and the few limited-overs series against Australia and Afghanistan in between.
India trusted Mukesh Kumar and Akash Deep to do the job in Test cricket alongside Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, but he now seems to be missing the bus for the ICC T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA as well.
His absence will be a massive blow for Gujarat Titans, who have traded Hardik Pandya in an all-cash deal to Mumbai Indians, naming Shubman Gill as their new skipper. In the last couple of seasons, in which the Titans reached the final twice and even won the tournament in their inaugural season, Shami was the major point of difference, picking wickets regularly.
